I Fall in Love With My Friends |
The story of a girl that tends to obsess. Big and small obsessions that collect on the trinket shelves of a cluttered mind. This is a collection of those obsessions, and the filaments that loosely tie them together so they may be easily dragged along behind.

LOL NO.
Is it just me, or does The Jeselnik Offensive make The Daily Show feel more slow-paced, unfunny, and soft-hitting?
Some back story:
- yourmomentofhate has been posting what they consider to be transphobic remarks from The Daily Show and Colbert Report on those tags recently and its starting to get a reaction.
- I think its a great discussion to have and that they have some good points. I sent the mod an ask with points like to those I’m about to make. (It wasn’t answered, I think, because they responded to a similar comment soon after.)
- If you haven’t, you might want to see some of the quotes the blog has posted. There are, indeed, many quotes that reference being “tricked” by a transvestite/transwoman, and instances of the words “trannie” and “shemale” being thrown around.
But is it hate speech or satire?
I think many of the early TDS quotes were insensitive, ignorant, and in poor taste. It seems that they have dropped words like those mentioned above as insults.
The Daily Show did a similar turn around with the word “retard.” People started pointing out how hurtful that word can be when used as an insult and it seemed to get the writer’s attention because they dropped it. If they haven’t had this change of heart with transphobic language already, then they need to be called out and I’m sure they’ll come around.
The Colbert report, however, is very different.
“Do you have any questions? Anything you want to know about me before I go into character and start saying these terrible things?” [1]The Colbert character is a conservative, ego-maniacal, hypocritical, homophobic, racist, transphobic, abilist, sexist, (etc) with little to no self-awareness.
He is also (like many or even all homophobic conservatives) in the closet. Numerous times on the show, the character Colbert has referenced being queer in a way he’s either too blind to see or too hypocritical to admit to (again, like real homophobic conservatives.)
The character seems to be a bisexual in denial. He, apparently, stalked a woman for awhile and has made multiple references to being “tricked” into having sexual encounters with men, including Jon Stewart [2], in absurd ways. (He even claimed he got the job because he blackmailed Stewart with “candid” photos [3]).
I think this parodies perfectly the conservative politicians and religious figures who *actually* try to use that ridiculous excuse. I think the joke is how comically compartmentalized his sexuality and overall identity is, and that denial of one’s own sexuality is really behind homophobia; not that he was actually “tricked” and “oh isn’t that gross!”.
I’m also reassured of the show’s intentions because once Colbert confused Lean Finely Textured Beef or LFTB with LGBT and said beef has so many hormones that its part of the transgendered community. He apologized on air and quickly pointed out the absurdity of the controversial segment [4].
I think the quotes are too taken out of context and should be re-examined.
What do you think?
Loving the people who have no idea what’s going on commenting on Stephen Colbert’s “bigotry” and “hate” on the Colbert Report. You realize that he’s SATIRIZING people with that view right? That’s what he DOES. I bet you think he’s a conservative too, don’t you? He’s been working in this style his whole career. Seriously sit down.
